Today

chickens heat

We have chickens on the brain.  Yesterday morning Tom woke up crowing that the heat lamp had burned out over the girls.  So we ran around like chickens with our heads cut off trying to find a new bulb to keep the girls warm.  Turns out Tom was just saying that the sky was falling.  The bulb hadn't burned out at all, he just couldn't see it because the half built coop was in the way.  I won't let this get stuck in my craw, he is not a bird brain he just broods over his chicks.  He was counting his chickens before they hatched in anticipation of fresh eggs.  I'm just hard boiled when it comes to these chicks.  Tom rules the roost when it come to his girls.

kids

What is it about kids and lipstick?  I have a picture of Tom slathered as a 3 year old in rosies red.  I have a picture of Henry puckering in corvett red. I have a picture of Albert in riot red pasted upon his face.  I am sure at any given time my mom could produce a picture of me slathered with lipstick.  Ella's color of choice...Dune Rose.

Chicken survival

Well two days and no chicken deaths to report.  So far so good! They are growing so fast.  I think we finally have the set up right.  Screen over the top so Norbert can't get to nosey, heat lamp suspended by tri-pod.  A book I got from the library has been most helpful.  It is called Your Chickens: A Kids's Guide to Raising and Showing.  The information started from the very basics.  We even averted disaster by knowing what pasting up was and how to fix it!

New Crop

Well the grand experiment of chickens has begun.  On a cold and snowy day we went to the ranch and feed store and got 4 baby chicks.  One buff orphington, one boradrock, and two americunas.  They are so cute, fuzzy making little peeping noises.  Norbert the dog does not know what to think.  Until they started moving about their pen he could have cared less.  We put them in an old tupperware bin with a little bit of pine shavings on the floor and a heat lamp to keep them warm.  I think they live in the box for 6 weeks.  Right now the box is inside in the living room.  I think in a couple of weeks as the weather gets warmer and the chicks get bigger they will move to the garage or shed.  I have named them, bbq, fried, stewed and baked, the children have different names in mind.

Garden

Well I can not wait to dig in the dirt.  I am actively planning our garden.  I bought some seeds the other day.  I want to try planting carrots in pot on the patio.  I bought some carnival carrot seeds.  I think the kids will like pulling them from the pots.  I also bought peas, parsnips, kale and lettuces.  I can't wait.  Tomorrow we go get the most interesting addition to our garden...chickens.  I kicked around this idea last summer, but it never happened.  This year I am ready.  We will get 4 baby chicks and see what happens, I figure we will either get eggs or BBQ.

Cotillion

Henry can DANCE!  Last night was the big cotillion ball.  There was a full ball room of children, siblings, parents and grandparents.  The kids got to show off their new manners, starting with a receiving line, escorting the little ladies to their seats, dancing, serving punch, more dancing, standing when a lady approaches and you are seated and thanking your host.  I am so proud of Henry.  When we waltzed he had great form and actually led! Swing dancing was great too!  This will serve him well in the future.  He will attend again next year.

Oh, and Ella had a great time to.  Here Nana picked out 5 new dresses for her cinderella self to choose from.  The yellow one was the one and only that had caught her eye the day before at target.  Thanks Nana...bippity boppity boo!
